Washington Golf & Country Club – Arlington, VA

Saturday, November 22nd, 2014

We installed a 1104 SF golf cart path for Washington Golf & Country Club (WGCC) in November of 2014. The Superintendent of the club chose Pewter for the Flexi-Pave color. Other future projects for this client may include: a bridge overlay, a sidewalk entry overlay, a ball washer station, and an upper deck overlay.

“Washington Golf and Country Club is a traditional private country club dedicated to providing exceptional service, facilities and programs to our members, families and guests in a fiscally responsible manner. Washington Golf and Country Club is located in close proximity to the Nation’s Capitol, just one of the many attractions of membership. The Georgian-style clubhouse, renovated in 2004, sits on one of the highest points in historic Arlington, Virginia. It looks out over one of the most beautiful and challenging 18-hole golf courses in the region and offers views across the Potomac River to the skyline of Washington. Situated on over 120 acres, the WGCC complex also includes a golf driving range, putting and practice greens, a swimming pool, 10 outdoor tennis courts, a five-court indoor tennis facility, and a well-equipped fitness center. The clubhouse features formal and informal dining rooms, a tap room, a men’s grill, a ladies lounge, various outdoor dining areas, as well as a cocktail lounge, meeting and party rooms accommodating groups of 18 to 60 persons, and a large, attractive ballroom, with a capacity of 300-400, the scene of many of the Club’s larger social events — dances, formal dinners, receptions, and weddings. A staff of highly experienced professionals is responsible for full programs of golf, tennis, swim and dive and instruction for all age and gender groups.”

“Since 1894 members and guests have marveled at our Donald Ross/ William Flynn designed course.  Once known as the “Playground of Presidents” the course offers a big challenge with not many yards.  Being just over 6000 yards from the tips, the sloped fairways and undulating greens keep the low handicapper honest while other sets of tee’s keep the mid to high handicapper coming back for more. Washington Golf and Country Club offers a complete pro shop and lessons from award winning Mid Atlantic PGA Professionals.”

Washington Golf & Country Club was once known as the “Club of Presidents.” You can read about the club’s fascinating history here.

Fort Ward Park – Alexandria, VA

Thursday, October 16th, 2014

Installation of Flexi-Pave at Historic Fort Ward Park in the City of Alexandria is now complete.  Part of the renovation was to achieve ADA compatibility which allowed more visitors to access the historic fort.  Previously the path from the information center to the fort was uneven terrain and the fort flooring was pea gravel which was inherently unstable to walk on and impossible for wheelchairs to access.  On October 24, 2014 original proposal was revised to include: Installation of additional Flexi-Pave for the two longest bastions; installation of a new staircase; demolition of old steel edging and installation of new edging along all bastions; and digging and backfilling archeological excavation of a historic well.  The renovations were completed by late November 2014, and the site is expected to receive a significant increase in annual visitors.

Fort Ward Park’s website states, “We are making history more accessible!  A public walkway which meets the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act is being constructed through part of the historic fort in an effort to make the site more accessible to a variety of audiences.  The project is being funded by a Save America’s Treasures grant and the City of Alexandria.  In preparation for the project, preliminary investigation was conducted by Alexandria Archaeology to determine that there would be no adverse impact to the historic site, and the project was approved by Federal and State historic preservation reviewers.  The material selected, Flexi-Pave, has a recycled rubber matrix that is eco-friendly and meets ADA standards. The color and texture of the path will suggest compacted gravel walkways that were constructed in some forts in the Civil War Defenses of Washington.” Learn more here.

DDOT Sidewalks

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

In a city wide effort to repair broken sidewalks throughout Washington DC, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is systematically replacing failing sidewalks. And in areas where tree roots are the culprit, the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) and DDOT have created a new standard. Flexi-Pave ADA accessible sidewalks have been used for over a year now to solve this problem. So Flexi-Pave has become the new standard for dealing with trees and sidewalks. Every week Capitol Flexi-Pave crews are installing Flexi-Pave somewhere in the District. Check the Installation Map or the Projects Page for the most current information on where we’ve been working.

American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial

Friday, August 29th, 2014

The opening ceremony for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial took place on October 5, 2014. In a city with memorials for each major US war and numerous renowned individuals, a permanent memorial for our wounded warriors has finally been built. After design submissions from more than 20 renowned architecture firms, the Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation selected Michael Vergason Landscape Architects for the new American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial’s design. Their prior work includes the National Cathedral, U.S. Cemetery at Omaha Beach (France), United States Supreme Court, Monticello, Montpelier, Gannett Corporate Headquarters, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Virginia.

The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial serves as a national public tribute to the over three million living disabled American veterans and the countless hundreds of thousands who have died. The Memorial is built on a 2.4-acre triangular site across from the U.S. Botanic Garden and is within sight of the U.S. Capitol, so members of Congress can be continually reminded of the human cost of war and the need to support America’s veterans.

The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial conveys an interplay of strength and vulnerability, loss and renewal with a star-shaped reflecting pool serving as the focal point. Three walls of laminated glass with text and images and four bronze sculptures will tell the story of the disabled veteran’s call to service, trauma, challenge of healing, and discovery of purpose. The Memorial design was conceived by Michael Vergason Landscape Architects, Ltd., and received final approvals from the Commission of Fine Arts in 2009 and the National Capital Planning Commission in 2010.

In November 2010 a groundbreaking was held with national spokesperson Gary Sinise and construction is finally complete. Towards the end of construction in August 2014, Flexi-Pave was be used to pave around the trees being planted at the memorial. Memorials are not typically know for being LEED or LID projects and as such, Flexi-Pave was chosen for this project due in part for its porosity, aesthetics, durability, sustainability, recycled content and other environmentally friendly characteristics.

Capitol Flexi-Pave is grateful for our Veterans and their self-sacrificial efforts to grant Americans the freedom we so cherish. For our freedom is not without cost, and these Veterans have born the majority of that cost. They and their families will forever carry the burdens of our freedom. By their efforts they have fulfilled one of God’s greatest commandments which is to love your neighbor as yourself.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” – John 15:13

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” – 1 John 3:16

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
