Residential Staircase & Patio – Washington, DC

Monday, August 25th, 2014

For this District of Columbia resident, the original proposal indicated a 75 square-foot Flexi-Pave backyard play area. Then, the proposal was revised to include both porches, both staircases, the backyard patio, plus the welding. We poured a total of 258 square-feet of Flexi-Pave to create 1 patio, 2 porches, and 2 staircases. We also had new guardrails welded for the upper porch & stair rail for the lower stairs. Chosen Flexi-Pave color was Coal Mine.

Glencarlyn Park – Arlington, VA

Friday, August 8th, 2014

In Summer 2014, Arlington County renovated another park with Flexi-Pave, this time Glencarlyn Park. The color chosen for this Flexi-Pave trail was Chestnut.

“The improvements at Glencarlyn Park Arlington Forest focus on the northern portion of the park that is bordered by Four Mile Run, the Washington & Old Dominion bicycle trail and South Harrison Street. This project will create a new 5-12 playground featuring a sand-play area with boulders, a climbing structure, swings and includes environmentally-friendly features including a native plant buffer and porous pavement. Amenities will include benches, picnic tables, bicycle racks, and a new concrete path between the tot lot and the new playground.” You can find out more about the Glencarlyn Park – Arlington Forest Neighborhood Conservation Park Improvement here.

DDOT Sidewalks – July 2014

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

In a city wide effort to repair broken sidewalks throughout Washington DC, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is systematically replacing failing sidewalks. And in areas where tree roots are the culprit, the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) and DDOT have created a new standard. Flexi-Pave ADA accessible sidewalks have been used for over a year now to solve this problem. So Flexi-Pave has become the new standard for dealing with trees and sidewalks. Every week Capitol Flexi-Pave crews are installing Flexi-Pave somewhere in the District. Check the Installation Map or the Projects Page for the most current information on where we’ve been working.

Little Bennett Park – Clarksburg, MD

Friday, July 25th, 2014

In late July 2014 we installed a 3000 SF Flexi-Pave trail at Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, MD. Chosen Flexi-Pave color was Earl Grey.

Little Bennett Regional Park is the largest natural gem of Montgomery County. Throughout its 3,700 acres, you will find over 20 miles of trails leading you to and through quality forests, meadows, and streams. This vast park is home to many historic sites, as well as an abundance of native plants and animals. Additionally, you will find Montgomery County’s only campground, and the Little Bennett Golf Course. While virtually undeveloped, there are plans to enhance the park. Approved in March 2007, the Little Bennett Master Plan will provide a well planned day use area to enrich your future visits to the park. Until then, we look forward to seeing you here in the northern part of the county on our trails or camping in the campground to explore our many natural wonders.”

Tysons Corner Center Tree Surround

Saturday, June 28th, 2014

For this 20 square-foot tree surround at Tysons Corner Center in McLean, VA, the chosen Flexi-Pave color was Chocolate. Flexi-Mulch was also used at this location, which is a long-lasting, non-moving product that contains every benefit of natural mulch minus the mess and expense of continual maintenance.

Additionally, we repaired part of the playground, which is made up of of EPDM rubber. For you science folks out there, EPDM stand for ethylene propylene diene monomer. Many municipalities and companies are interested in replacing their EPDM playgrounds with a softer, all rubber version of Flexi-Pave, as EPDM doesn’t last very long. Normally, Flexi-Pave is made of 50% recycled tires and 50% granite chips. The all-rubber version of Flexi-Pave is made of 100% recycled tires, and is called P2000, which meets The American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) 6-foot fall criteria, plus it lasts a whole lot longer than the EPDM synthetic rubber.

Emory Woods Sidewalk Replacement Program – Gaithersburg, MD

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

The City of Gaithersburg, MD was impressed with the half mile fitness trail installed at the local headquarters of Lockheed Martin, so when the City Arborist was called to diagnose and offer solutions for a neighborhoods sidewalks separating he knew what to do.  He called Capitol Flexi-Pave to evaluate if a porous flexible paving would solve their problems in this neighborhood too.  The idea was put before the HOA board, and all parties agreed to proceed with this option.  Project was completed in May of 2014.

DDOT Sidewalks – April 2014

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

The picture of this sidewalk is one of the many examples of what happens with impervious materials like non-porous concrete and asphalt. This tree can’t breathe and get what it needs to survive so it creates what we call “knees” on the roots that work their way up to the surface to get what it needs to survive. With Flexi-Pave this will not happen as Flexi-Pave is porous so the trees get what they need (air, water, nutrients) and they will not have to hatch an escape plan.

And in areas where tree roots are the culprit, the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) and DDOT have created a new standard.
