Arlington National Cemetery

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

We have completed the two phases of the pervious rubber sidewalks for Arlington National Cemetery. The first 10,000 square feet of Flexi-Pave for the Eisnenhower Drive sidewalk was installed in 2011. The remainder of the sidewalk now stretches from the south end of the Cemetery at Patton Drive all the way to the Tourmobile turn-a-round area at Memorial Drive. In total the pourous sidewalk covers 20,000 square feet and extends one mile. Phase 2 of the Eisenhower sidewalk was completed in 2012 and is now open to the public.

Arlington National Cemetery management chose Flexi-Pave in part due to their “Green Initiative”. This initiative includes consideration for Stormwater Management, LEED, and use of sustainable materials. The Flexi-Pave sidewalk at the cemetery used over 7,000 recycled passenger tires in its construction.

Residential Driveway & Patio in Annapolis

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

Nestled in an exclusive Annapolis neighborhood on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, this homeowner had all options at his disposal when designing his home and landscape. For decking he chose Ipe wood, for a dining room table, one solid 25 foot slab of rare wood, and when choosing his driveway material, he wanted an environmentally friendly, long lasting and attractive product. In addition, the city Arborist required a Tree Preservation Plan and would not allow concrete, asphalt or other impervious surfaces to be installed that would suffocate and cause decline to the large trees adjacent to the driveway. After consulting with Tree Preservation experts, a solution was found in Flexi-Pave. Since air and water flow through the surface, and since Flexi-Pave is a “cold pour”, the trees would not be harmed whatsoever by the driveway being installed on top of their roots. This solution satisfied the city environmentalists. After choosing one of 28 available colors, the homeowner commissioned Capitol Flexi-Pave to install the drive. During the multi-day installation, he was so thrilled with the product he asked that his walkout mud-room also be paved in the all-rubber P2000 version of Flexi-Pave. This room was the changing room/shower room for guests entering & exiting the house on the way to the pool. So as wet swimmers shower and change, the water drains directly through the Flexi-Pave floor and into hidden drains so the surface remains dry, non-slip and cushiony.

Baltimore Firestone Sidewalk

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

The latest Firestone store to open again has a Flexi-Pave sidewalk in front of the store.  Flexi-Pave is the preferred product for all Firestones nationwide.  It is selected due to its environmentally friendly footprint and recycled tire content. For this sidewalk, chosen Flexi-Pave color was Forest Green.

National Zoo Conservation Carousel

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

In planning for many years and the secret desire of many at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park.  A Carousel has finally been built.  But it is no ordinary carousel.  This one features zoo animals instead of horses.  Also it was designed to be environmentally friendly and therefore uses photovoltaic cells to power part of the equipment.  It also features porous flexible pavement, better know as Flexi-Pave.  The reviews of Flexi-Pave being used at the carousel by both visitors and Smithsonian Staff have been excellent to date.

National Zoo Elephant House

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo is the latest site to begin installing Flexi-Pave on a large scale. In 2012, Flexi-Pave was installed at the newly refurbished Elephant House courtyard. Following that, the long awaited Conservation Carousel was built adjacent to the Lion & Tiger exhibit. All the paving in the Elephant House courtyard and around the carousel, totaling almost 10,000 square feet was poured with Flexi-Pave. Flexi-Pave was chosen for it’s intrinsic properties including stormwater retention, LEED, LID, ADA compatibility and recycled materials. The Elephant House courtyard and the Carousel are both now open to the public so stroll on down the Olmestead walk and kick the proverbial tires of the Zoo’s latest additions.

St. Stephens & St. Agnes School Ballfield Improvements

Friday, October 5th, 2012

It’s time to re-think traditional paving. Concrete and asphalt have their place as main roads and bridges, but other paving situations can easily be made green by substituting porous paving instead. Not only do the agencies see Flexi-Pave as invisible due to it’s 2500 gallons per hour infiltration rate, but it cleans the stormwater too and sequesters used passenger tires into a second life surface rather than being burned as tire-derived-fuel in cement kilns.

So when a private high school in Alexandria wanted to renovate their baseball and softball fields, they incorporated Flexi-Pave as part of their plan. There was no need for the walking surfaces to be impervious. The areas around the dugouts and bleachers were specified to be Flexi-Pave. This solved several problems. It provided an ADA complient, dry, non-slip surface for the parents and teachers to traverse. It also allowed the sites hydrology to go unchanged as far as the paving footprint was concerned. And for an upscale school like this, it was fitting to have a custom paving surface that complimented the rest of the campus.

Triangle Park, Washington DC

Monday, September 24th, 2012

A long neglected park in Northeast Washington DC got a facelift in 2012. Part of a complete renovation performed by EYA was to incorporate Flexi-Pave trails throughout the park. What before was a run-down litter filled park is now a pleasant stop for walks with the kids or a dog. Visitors can peruse 3 trails that meet in the center of the park where a 40 foot diameter courtyard surrounded with benches is found. A requirement from the District of Columbia’s Landscape Architect and the DDOT city Arborists was to not harm the mature willow oak trees that were located throughout the park. And thanks to the inherent properties of Flexi-Pave, whereby it allows both water and air to flow through it, the tree roots are able to thrive untouched.

Residential Driveway in Leesburg, VA

Saturday, August 25th, 2012

A city official in the charming Town of Leesburg, VA wanted to be the first resident in the Greater Washington DC area install a driveway made out of Flexi-Pave. This homeowner who was also a locally famous artist had many choices when paving his drive. But he recognized the environmental benefits of Flexi-Pave over all other pavement options he explored and wanted to do his part to help the environment while also gaining a high-end gucci driveway for his quaint villa. Previously he felt constrained by having only two color options: black asphalt or grey concrete. But times have changed. Picking his own custom color Pewter from the 28 available Flexi-Pave colors was an added bonus.

Dora Kelley Park Trail

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Dora Kelley Park is a local favorite for hiking, biking, dog walking, and nature watching. But for years, the unimproved trail had been problematic for several reasons, first the intermittent creeks would overflow their banks and wash out the trail and second patrons would trip and fall on the uneven path which had been eroded from years of use.

The City of Alexandria explored many options, but due to the trail being in an RPA or Resource Protection Area, impervious pavements like asphalt and concrete were not allowed. Flexi-Pave was chosen as the material to pave the trail with due to its resilient nature and lack of maintenance requirements. City of Alexandia polled the community residents and asked them to rate the new trail once it was installed, and results were overwhelmingly positive.

I Street Synagogue Tree Surrounds

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Tripping hazards plague many property managers, the reason is frivolous lawsuits from pedestrians who seize the opportunity to sue after tripping on uneven pavement and elevation changes caused by street trees. Tree pits especially are a problem in tight urban environments so one particular Washington DC property management company decided to head off the problem and follow Walt Disney World & the City of Key West’s examples, they paved all the tree pits on their properties with Flexi-pave. One day they were liable to trip-fall lawsuits because of the tree pits, but the next day when the Flexi-pave was cured, the problem was solved once and for all. The management company and property tenants were pleased with the outcome and they continue to find additional areas on their properties where Flexi-Pave can solve their problems.
