Overlook Apartments – Hyattsville, MD

Monday, August 19th, 2013

In summer 2013, Overlook Apartments in Hyattsville Maryland were being renovated to achieve ADA compatibility for it’s residents and guests. Part of the renovation was to replace existing sidewalks and install new sidewalks using Flexi-Pave. Flexi-Pave was chosen for this project for it’s porous properties that allow stormwater to pass through, rather than runoff. Maryland National Park & Planning Commission waived the need for stormwater mitigation measures since the paving materials were specified to be Flexi-Pave, saving the owner a significant amount. Flexi-Pave color chosen was Pewter.

And after many months of design development, a number of these parks have now been constructed or renovated. The second to come on line was James Hunter Park.

DDOT Sidewalks – July 2013

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

In a city wide effort to repair broken sidewalks throughout Washington DC, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is systematically replacing failing sidewalks. And in areas where tree roots are the culprit, the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) and DDOT have created a new standard. Flexi-Pave ADA accessible sidewalks have been used for over a year now to solve this problem. So Flexi-Pave has become the new standard for dealing with trees and sidewalks. Every week Capitol Flexi-Pave crews are installing Flexi-Pave somewhere in the District. Check the Installation Map or the Projects Page for the most current information on where we’ve been working.

DDOT Tree Surrounds #1

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

Washington DC is the latest municipality to adopt Flexi-Pave for use as tree surrounds and city sidewalks. Starting in Summer 2013, Capitol Flexi-Pave entered into a 5-year contract with DDOT to replace failing tree surrounds and sidewalks throughout the city. But rather than just replace the tree grates or fill in the 4’x10′ tree pits with Flexi-Pave, UFA & DDOT decided to take it one step further and actually improve the microenvironment for the district trees. This is being accomplished by enlarging the tree boxes to approximately 18′ long and and as wide as the current sidewalk is. After the failing concrete is removed, the soil is aerated with a Supersonic Air Knife and Soil Amendments are added to the soil. Then the flexible porous paving is installed flush with the existing sidewalks and paved up to the tree trunk so the soil will no longer be compacted by heavy pedestrian foot traffic, especially in areas near bus stops. Special installation techniques are used where the Flexi-Pave meets the buttress roots of the trees, so that as the trunks continue to grow in diameter, the Flexi-Pave can self-adjust without girdling the tree.
